Module 2 Assignment
This assignment addresses course outcome 1 and module learning objective 1.
Chapter 2 talks about the ways we understand and present who we are to the world. Some of that comes from our families and how we're raised. Some comes from what we watch and read. Some from our various cultural groups. And some from the way are brains and bodies work. Specifically 2.3 Perceiving and Presenting Self offers some useful ways of understanding how we develop our self-concept.
For this activity, you have two options:
1. You can reflect on your own self-presentation over time. Think about how you have changed as you've gotten older. You should identify 3 distinctly different presentations of self and discuss either what influenced the choice or how we can interpret that choice using at least one concept from the reading. You didn't need to be aware of the reasons at the time of the choice for it to be useful for this reflection. Often, we don't discover why we did something until we have a greater perspective on it.
2. You can identify 3 popular culture influences that you were inspired or constrained by. Did you want to be like a particular celebrity or public figure? Were there certain beauty standards or expectations you saw on TV or around you that you felt obligated to achieve? Have you ever seen someone like you in the media that felt particularly important to your understanding of yourself, your communities, and/or our wider culture? As you think about these external influences on your self-concept, you should incorporate at least one concept from the reading.
You can write about this in paragraph or list form as long as you provide sufficient details so that I can understand your meaning. If you'd like to include pictures of or links to your examples, please do, but that's not required at all. Just an option if that's more fun for you.
