As you work through the activity, answer the following questions:

1. Define the term hormone.
2. What intracellular effects do hydrophobic hormones, like estrogen, have on target cells?
3. When can the estrogen receptor bind to the co-activator protein?
4. Which is the disease most commonly driven by aberrant estrogen signaling?
5. Describe how we can use our understanding of estrogen signaling to treat breast cancer.
6. Some tumors may eventually become resistant to tamoxifen due to mutations in the estrogen receptor. Where would you expect mutations to occur in the estrogen receptor that allow a tamoxifen-resistant tumor to grow?
