Case Study
Patrice pitches on her school’s softball team and had noticed over the past couple of weeks that her elbow has felt sore right after a game or a hard practice. But, after keeping an ice pack over her elbow for an hour, the pain eventually went away. The softball team had an end-of-season retreat at the lake and Patrice was looking forward to some wake-boarding. On one of her turns to wakeboard, Patrice felt a sharp pain in her pitching arm, while also hearing a popping sound, just as she started to be pulled by the boat tow rope. As her pitching arm felt weak, she stopped wakeboarding but continued to swim with her teammates as the cold lake water felt good on the arm. The next day, however, Patrice noticed that she had a large reddish bruise around her elbow area and distal upper arm. She put ice on the area but the bruising got worse and she noticed an unusual bulge in her upper arm. She phoned her coach and was told it was probably either a sprain or a strain and that she should go to the ER as possible.
